Lake Gordon Shoreline Maintenance WorkLake Gordon has been drawn down to allow for shoreline maintenance work. The project will last until early summer. The boat ramp will remain open and bank fishing is welcome. For questions please call Dan Michaelson at (434) 392-4369.

This 157-acre, Department lake in Mecklenburg County, has a very good largemouth bass population. Recent sampling showed many bass over 15 inches, with a fair number of bass over 20 inches. Lake Gordon also has good redear sunfish populations, fair crappie and chain pickerel populations, and is a very good channel catfish lake. Channel catfish are stocked in alternating years.

Access Permit Requirement

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) will require an Access Permit for visitors to department-owned Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and public fishing lakes, who are age 17 and older, unless they possess a valid Virginia hunting, freshwater fishing, or trapping license, or a current Virginia boat registration. Maps & Directions

Take U.S. Route 1 south and Route 58 west out of South Hill to Route 664, and then turn right (west) on Route 799 to the lake.


Biologist Reports


Largemouth bass – 14-18 slot, 5 per day (all bass 14 to 18 inches must be released unharmed)

Sunfish – no size limit, 50 per day

Crappie – no size limit, 25 per day

Channel catfish – 15 inches minimum, 8┬áper day

The following are prohibited on this property: Outboard motor use, swimming, open air fires, trotlines, littering, sailboats, alcohol, fishing tournaments involving prizes, trapping without permit, and camping.

Beware of the sunken stumps on the upper part of the lake.
