Norfolk Botanical Garden

Description

Surrounded by water on three sides with picturesque canals, manicured gardens and natural areas, the Norfolk Botanical Garden provides excellent habitat for a wide diversity of birds and butterfly species.  Over 175 bird species have been documented here.  You can explore the grounds on foot, by tram or by boat and there are twelve miles of walking trails.  Some of the trails are through forested natural areas and woodland gardens, which provide ample opportunity to view warblers and other songbirds, hummingbirds, and birds of prey, such as hawks, owls, and bald eagles.  Osprey, shorebirds, wading birds, and wintering waterfowl can be sighted while walking the waterfront trails or enjoying a boat tour on the lake (check with garden for boat tour schedule and pricing).

Pollinators thrive in the Native Plant/Pollinator Gardens while native species of butterflies (including various swallowtails, common buckeye, monarch, fritillaries, American lady, painted lady, clouded sulphur, and many more) abound in the Butterfly Garden adjacent to the unique Bristow Butterfly House (open seasonally).  One might even spot the rare King’s Hairstreak.  Other wildlife that can be observed include abundant turtles, plus lizards, raccoons, and an occasional North American river otter.

Norfolk Botanical Garden is open year round. Refer to the Botanical Garden’s website for hours, pricing, special events, and seasonal activities.
