New River Trail State Park – Cliffview

Description

Elevation: 2308 ft.

Although this site is only a few miles along Chestnut Creek from the parking area in downtown Galax, a notable change occurs in the wildlife as the trail moves away from the city and into the countryside. White-tailed deer quickly become abundant with numerous does and fawns wandering along the trail in the early summer mornings and in the neighboring fields. Birds such as indigo bunting and white-eyed and yellow-throated vireos are singing in most bushes. Ruby-throated hummingbird breeze across meadows, investigating every speck of color they see in search of nectar, while belted kingfisher rattle up and down the creek.
