|Clinch Mountain WMA & Laurel Bed Lake – Road ClosureThe Tumbling Creek road on Clinch Mountain is closed due to a landslide that damaged the road over the weekend of June 22. Temporary access to Laurel Bed Lake is being provided via the Flattop Mountain Road. The Flattop Mountain road begins at the intersection of White Rocks Road and Route 91 (Veteran’s Road), between Broadford and Tazewell. Once the Tumbling Creek Road is repaired, the Flattop Mountain road will again be closed to through traffic. The Flattop Mountain road is 14 miles of gravel-surface road from Route 91 to Laurel Bed Lake, single-lane road with very few turnouts. Trailers are not prohibited, but are not recommended. Signs are in place to guide visitors to Laurel Bed Lake. From Saltville, take Route 91 North to the intersection with White Rocks Road. From Route 19 at Wardell (between Lebanon and Claypool Hill), take Route 609 (Wardell Road) to Route 91 and then to the intersection with White Rocks Road. From Route 460 in Tazewell, take Route 16 South to Route 604 (Thompson Valley Road) west to Route 91 and then to the intersection with White Rocks Road.|

Laurel Bed Lake lies within Clinch Mountain Wildlife Management Area and is a manmade lake created by the damming of Big Tumbling Creek. The lake and the surrounding area are popular venues for bird-watching. For a description of the birding opportunities, refer to Clinch Mountain Wildlife Management Area.
- To Access the Site: A Restore the Wild Membership, Virginia hunting license, freshwater fishing license, boat registration, or an access permit is required.
- Some areas of the WMA are subject to seasonal closures and some roads may be closed during inclement weather.
- Hunting could be occurring at this site April 1 – May 31 and September 1 – February 28th, except on Sundays. If you are visiting this site during hunting seasons, please wear blaze orange for safety.
