Prescribed Fire Big Woods WMA

Of all the tools for habitat management, ‘prescribed fire’ can be the most efficient and cost-effective. DWR uses fire to help manage selected forests. With the help of our partners at the Department of Conservation and Recreation Natural Heritage, and the Virginia Department of Forestry, over 300 acres were successfully burned at Big Woods WMA, helping to establish a ‘pine savanna’ habitat. Species including turkey, quail, deer, field sparrow, and prairie warbler all benefit from this habitat.
