DGIF will partner with Virginia’s higher education institutions whose academic programs are closely aligned with the technical, legal and administrative needs of the agency. The VDGIF WIN will work hard to provide internship opportunities closely tailored to the students’ interest to maximize their opportunities.
Following are some frequently asked questions for students who may be interested in internship opportunities with DGIF:
Do I have to attend a specific college/university in order to be considered?
Students may be enrolled in any accredited college or university and pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in a related field that aligns with the Agency’s mission. Students enrolled in accredited community colleges are also eligible to apply. DGIF has partnership agreements with many colleges and universities across the state. A partnership agreement must be in place to be considered. Please view the current list of colleges to see if your school is listed. If not, please contact Estella Randolph, Volunteer Administrator, so that she can make appropriate contact with your school.
What majors are required for a DGIF internship?
The majors required will depend on the requirements for the specific internship opportunity. Please visit the available internships link to view the postings and the requirements for each position.
Are internships available if I’m interested in becoming a Conservation Police Officer?
Currently, the agency does not have opportunities available for students pursuing degrees in criminal justice, public safety or natural resources which require a law enforcement internship as a part of degree requirements. In addition to the initial application, other paperwork may be required and other requirements may have to be met in order to be considered for a law enforcement internship.
Are the internships paid or unpaid?
All DGIF internships are unpaid.
Will I receive academic credit for the internship?
The DGIF WIN defers to the institution with regards to academic requirements for student participation and does not directly grant credit. Our specialized, professional staff will supervise and evaluate students. The institution retains full academic control of the amount and type of credits to be awarded (pass/fail, satisfactory/unsatisfactory or letter grades) and reporting requirements. If the intern desires to receive academic credit, the appropriate paperwork must be submitted to the HR department or the hiring manager/supervisor.
How long are the internships?
The duration of the internships will vary according to the specific assignment. During the screening/interview process, the hiring manager/supervisor will discuss the specific details related to duration, hours, etc.
Where will I be working?
The location of the internship opportunity may be within any of the DGIF four regions or at the headquarters in Richmond.
What will I be doing while working for DGIF?

Is housing or transportation provided?
Most DGIF internships do not offer housing or transportation. Students must be able to provide their own transportation to/from the work location. Interns will not be eligible for mileage reimbursement. If housing is offered, it will be included in the job posting that are listed on the available internships link.
Are internships available for high school students?
DGIF does not currently offer internships for high school students. In order to be accepted into the WIN, the student must be at least 18 years old, be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university and have an interest in or an aptitude for working in a temporary learning environment.
