North Fork Mountain, WV

North Fork Mountain has been an important site for nesting peregrine falcons in WV and the broader southern Appalachian region since the early 1990s, when the first breeding pair in the state was documented since the 1940s. The pair nested in 1991 and 1992, but no nesting activity was documented at the site again until 1999. Following a four year nesting run through 2002, breeding activity at the site has not been consistent. Single peregrines were documented in 2003, 2007 and 2009, and a pair observed in 2005, 2006, 2008 ad 2010, with no falcons documented in 2004. The last successful nesting attempt took place in 2006, when one young peregrine was fledged from the nest. The site continues to be monitored annually.
