Powhatan Lakes Restoration Project

Powhatan Lakes, located within the boundaries of Powhatan WMA, is a beautiful outdoor haven for anyone who enjoys outdoor activities. The lakes area provides a diversity of wildlife species and outdoor recreational opportunities to include fishing, wildlife observation, bird watching, and hunting to name a few. The Lakes are currently undergoing a major restoration project that is well underway. When the restoration is completed the area will be a gem for outdoor enthusiasts. The dams have been rebuilt with the construction of handicapped fishing piers, observation decks, boat courtesy piers, landscaping, and trails in progress. The lakes will refill over the winter and in about three years, after restocking, will provide outstanding fishing. This project is a great example of fulfilling VDGIF's mission to provide opportunities for all who enjoy wildlife, inland fish, boating, and related outdoor recreation.

The restoration project at Powhatan Lakes is in need of volunteers. As mentioned, we are in the process of building fishing piers, observation decks, and other structures to serve visitors to the lakes. It is critical that much of the building of structures around the lakes occur prior to the lakes refilling, and we are short of manpower to accomplish this. There is an IMMEDIATE NEED for volunteers with skills related to carpentry and/or light construction. Other skills needed for future projects around the lakes include trail building, nest box construction and erection for ducks and blue birds, design of native plant gardens, and interpretive materials and signage. Opportunities for volunteerism from such groups as clubs, schools, contractors, civic organizations, scout troops, businesses, hunt clubs, and conservation organizations abound at Powhatan Lakes. There are opportunities for individuals young and old, men and women. Everyone is invited and welcomed. We also have a need for contributions of snacks, water, tools such as hammers and saws, nails, bolts and nuts, drills, shovels, and other building materials and supplies. All contributions are welcome.

Powhatan Lakes are located within the Powhatan WMA approximately 25 miles west of Richmond. The lakes are located off of Rte 60 about 3 miles west of Powhatan Courthouse. Turn north on Rt.684 to east on Rt. 674 (Powhatan Lakes Rd.) to Rt. 625 to Powhatan Lakes.
