Permit Inspector

General Description:

Provides on-site inspections of facilities and properties, and utilizes standardized checklists and training, to verify applicant compliance with VDGIF requirements for issuance of (various—wildlife rehabilitation, game bird breeder, game preserve, other) permits.

Specific Duties:

  • Makes site inspections of facilities and properties
  • Utilizes criteria checklists and training to determine appropriate action for approval or denial of permit
  • Issues permits, or makes recommendations for approval or denial as appropriate
  • Documents site inspection findings and decisions on appropriate forms; files reports
  • Performs occasional site visits to existing permit holders to ensure and improve compliance with permit conditions or requirements
  • Detects unsafe or unsanitary conditions and reports them to VDGIF staff as needed for further action
  • Conducts self in a manner that reflects positively on VDGIF and CWF
  • Makes recommendations to permit applicants and holders for improved compliance or holding conditions


  • Ability to read and interpret VDGIF permit conditions, rules, regulations and laws pertaining to permits
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to utilize maps, directions and/or GPS to locate addresses and properties for site inspections
  • Ability to work cooperatively with VDGIF staff and permit applicants/holders to further the safe and effective stewardship of wildlife resources
  • Prior knowledge and experience with wildlife holding, care, and/or treatment is a plus

Time Commitment:

This position requires occasional availability on an "as needed" basis. Volunteer may schedule inspections as convenient or mutually agreed to with applicant, within the VDGIF time frame for completion.
