Independence Public Boat Landing

Description

Elevation: 2324 ft.

This boat landing provides access to a relatively wide and deep stretch of the New River. Here the muddy riverbanks support spotted sandpiper during migration and a few during the summer months. Other wading birds in the area include great blue and green herons. The riverside vegetation provides habitat for several species of open country birds. In the grassy areas near the water, look for a variety of wildflowers. Black-eyed Susan are the most obvious, although small more subtle flowers such as the star-like lesser stitchwort can also be found with some searching.

Directions

From Grayson County Recreation Park, return to US 58 in the Town of Independence. Turn right and continue west 0.9 miles to US 21. Turn left onto US 21 South and travel 2.9 miles to Rt. 701/Old River Lane. Turn right on Old River Lane and continue 0.6 miles to Rt. 700. Turn left and follow Rt. 700 under the US 21 bridge 0.6 miles to the boat landing on the right. This site is viewable only by boat.
