Grayson County Recreation Park

Description

Elevation: 2581 ft.

Located on the eastern edge of the Town of Independence, this park provides a variety of facilities for outside activities. In addition to a running track and public swimming pool, a short trail meanders through the forested hillsides of both hardwood and pine dominant areas. Pines also decorate the park picnic area. The areas closer to the running track and parking areas consist of open fields and shrubby areas. In mid-summer, search these shrubby areas for fruiting blackberries. Birds found in these habitats include typical woodland and open land species. Look for eastern wood-pewee in the pine trees surrounding the picnic shelters. A variety of warblers have been seen in the park during migration.
