Site PRM03: New Directions Farm
Established in the heart of Virginia's Piedmont, New Directions Farm is the perfect spot to get away from urban life and get right in the middle of a rural retreat. This 90-acre farm offers lots of opportunities for outdoor exploration. The fields across the farm support grassland-loving species such as eastern meadowlarks and eastern kingbirds, and every fence post seems to be occupied by a perching eastern bluebird. Over at the pond, keep an eye out for some of the Kernisky's massive common snapping turtles, or perhaps their nesting Canada geese. Search amongst the property's pines for white-breasted nuthatches and pine warblers or scan the treeline for white-tailed deer or wild turkeys. Keep looking up for a flyover red-tailed hawk or the occasional osprey.
Leaving the Briery Presbyterian Church, return south on Rt. 747 for 0.2 miles to Rt. 654. Turn right and head west on Rt. 654 for 0.2 miles to Rt. 652/Briery Road. Turn left and go south 1.4 miles to the farm. Park in the designated area and walk along the farm roads.
