Site CSY03: Fort Story
Description
New boardwalks provide overlooks to Cape Henry Beach and O'Keefe's, where northern gannet can be seen much of the year, as well as brown pelican, gulls, and terns. The 1607 Anglo landing here is well documented, and a new historic interpretive trail will highlight the significance of military installations along the cape. A large granite cross marks the location of the First Landing. The old and new Cape Henry Lighthouses are also on this site. The Cape Henry Lighthouse was the first public building authorized by the new federal government in 1789, and it was also the first lighthouse on the Chesapeake Bay. Note: There no access to any other parts of the installation as they are designated military training areas
Directions
From First Landing State Park return to US 60 East/Shore Drive. Travel 2.0 miles and turn left onto Atlantic Avenue and follow the signs to the Fort Story lighthouse. Access to this site may be restricted due to changing security levels. You will need picture ID to access the installation.
