Google Earth is an online mapping system that combines satellite images, GIS (global information system) data and a globe in one free computer application. Google Earth version 5 may be downloaded from Google's website. Simply download and follow the onscreen instruction to install (note that Google Chrome a new web browser is included by default but can be unselected before downloading). Google Earth is supported on the following systems: Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7, Mac OS X, and Linux. There is even an iPhone application.
Once Google Earth is installed on your computer you're ready to explore the VBWT! You can download the VBWT Google Earth dataset here.
- Save the file somewhere you can find it easily
- Open the folder where you saved the file
- Double click on the VBWT.kmz icon - this will open Google Earth and the VBWT.
- The VBWT will open in the Temporary Places Folder of Google Earth
- Right-click on VBWT sites and select Save to My Places
The VBWT will now be available to you to explore any time you open Google Earth. You'll see red cardinal icons—each one representing a VBWT site. If you click on the icons you'll call up site information such as VBWT Loop and site #, Site contact information and even links to the location's website. You can get directions to and from the site. Use Google Earth to build a custom VBWT trip itinerary!
In addition to helping you find exciting new places to view wildlife, this application will also help you plan your trip. Under the Layers in Google Earth you'll find many features that will help you navigate—you can view roads and under Places of Interest find lodging, restaurants, and gas stations along your route.
