Public Invited to Comment on Virginia Stocked Trout Management Plan
The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) and Virginia Tech's Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation have initiated a process to develop a statewide Stocked Trout Management Plan. This plan, which will attempt to incorporate all stocked trout stakeholders' values, will be similar in scope and purpose to the Virginia White-tailed Deer Management Plan and Black Bear Management plan (under revision). The Virginia Stocked Trout Management Plan will be designed to provide broad guidance on policies for addressing the complex management challenges and issues related to producing desirable fishing experiences for stocked trout.
The DGIF recognizes the popularity and history of stocked trout fishing in Virginia. In addition to the development of a long-term management plan, this research will also address the following questions:
1. How many stocked trout do anglers catch and harvest?
2. Why are trout license sales declining?
3. What can be done to improve angler satisfaction with stocked trout fishing and management in Virginia?
A necessary first step in this process is the identification of issues with stocked trout fishing and management in Virginia. Therefore, the DGIF invites public input on the stocked trout program and stocked trout fishing. Eight public meetings will be held across Virginia on the following dates:
