Board of Game and Inland Fisheries Meeting

The Board will meet and hear staff recommendations that the Board propose regulation amendments that would: (i) to authorize the director to take measures to prevent, control or eradicate the spread of diseases in the Commonwealth whenever such diseases threaten wildlife, a disease in wildlife has implications for human, domestic or agricultural animal health, or a disease is confirmed in wildlife held in captivity that threatens wildlife, human, domestic or agricultural animal health; (ii) add yellow perch, white perch, gizzard shad, carp, and gar to the list of freshwater fish that can be harvested from below the fall line in all tidal rivers of the Chesapeake Bay and sold commercially in accordance with Virginia Marine Resources Commission commercial fishing regulations, and size and harvest limits set by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries; and (iii) legalize the taking of gizzard shad and white perch from below the fall line in all tidal rivers of the Chesapeake Bay using a gill net, in accordance with Virginia Marine Resources Commission recreational gill net regulations, and size and harvest limits set by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. The recommended effective dates for all may be January 8, 2007 or later. The Board will solicit and hear comments from the public. Any proposed regulatory actions will be published in the Virginia Register of Regulations, posted on the internet at www.dgif.virginia.gov, and summaries advertised in newspapers. A public comment period will be held on any proposed regulation amendments, and adoption of any regulation amendments as final will take place at a subsequent Board meeting. The Board is exempted from the Administrative Process Act (§ 2.2-4002 of the Code of Virginia) in promulgating wildlife management regulations, including the length of seasons, bag limits and methods of take set on the wildlife resources within the Commonwealth of Virginia; the Board promulgates boating regulations under the authority of § 29.1-701(E) of the Code of Virginia; and publishes all proposed and final regulations as required by § 2.2-4031.
The Board intends to hear reports from the following committees: Education, Planning and Outreach; Finance, Audit and Compliance Committee; Wildlife and Boat; and Search. The Board may also discuss general and administrative issues, and hold a closed session at some time during the meeting.
