1. How do I get started?
You will need to create a customer ID account on Go Outdoors Virginia even if you have purchased licenses online in the past.
View a brief video tutorial on how to create a customer ID and purchase a license:
To create an customer ID, visit GoOutdoorsVirginia.com, enter your date of birth and a second form of identification, such as last four digits of your social security number, as well as your last name. If you have a previous year’s hunting/fishing license, please enter the license number and the year as your second form of identification, so the system can retrieve any details we have for your customer account. If you have already created an account since July 1, 2016, you will simply need to log in.
2. I’m a lifetime license holder, or have previously held an annual hunting license, but the system won’t let me purchase deer/turkey tags, or other licenses.
If you have a current license including a lifetime license that pre-dates the Go Outdoors Virginia system (July 1, 2016) you will need to enter your lifetime license information into your Customer ID. To do this: Log on to your Go Outdoors Virginia account using your customer ID and select the “Build My License History” button at the top right of the home screen. From here you can add your current license info.
For Lifetime licenses: Enter the 10 digit CID number of the license (on back of card) and select LIFETIME as the license year. Your lifetime license will be acknowledged.
Please note some older lifetime license cards will not have the CID number listed on the card. If this is the case, contact DGIF to obtain your old lifetime license CID number.
To add an annual or multi-year license: Enter the VA number of the license then select the License year listed on the license.

3. What is HIP? Do I need to register for HIP?
HIP is the Harvest Information Program, and hunters who plan to hunt doves, waterfowl, rails, woodcock, snipe, coots, gallinules or moorhens in Virginia must be registered. HIP is required each year and a new registration permit is needed for the 2016–2017 hunting season. In the past, hunters were given a HIP number. A change for the 2016–2017 seasons is that hunters will be issued a Permit with their hunting license instead of being issued a number.
To register for HIP: Select HIP from the Go Outdoors Virginia license transaction page, complete the brief survey, and it will be added to your license package. There is no cost associated with HIP.
4. How do I find the licenses I’m looking for? What is included in the license packages?
After accessing your new customer account and clicking on “Purchase Licenses,” you are able to locate and add-to-cart specific licenses by scrolling down the page, beginning with our most Popular Licenses, followed by Special Licenses, Hunting Licenses, and then Fishing Licenses.
Each of these sections can be collapsed or expanded to make it easier to view.
Also in the new Go Outdoors Virginia solution, customers can take advantage of specific bundled license Packages, which offer hunters and anglers a quick selection tailored to Virginia’s Deer and Turkey Hunter, Waterfowl Hunter, Avid Angler, and the “Super Sportsmen” who wish to hunt and fish for EVERYTHING across the entire Commonwealth. These specific bundles include a new 100th Anniversary Collectors Hard Card to display your licenses. At the bottom of this same page, customers can also make a donation to the DGIF Non-Game Fund or Hunters for the Hungry at the same time as purchasing their licenses and permits.
5. Why does a license from last year show up on my new license ?
Hunting and Fishing Licenses are valid for 1 year from the date of purchase. All current and valid licenses will appear on your customer ID and your printed license. If a previous year’s license appears then it has not yet expired. You are not being “double-charged” when this occurs.
