Principal Duties & Responsibilities
Supports fish culture activities at Marion Fish Hatchery. Assists in all phases of cold water hatchery operations including: the collection, culture, transport, and distribution of all life stages of fish; feeding and sampling fish; data collection and records maintenance. Assists with maintenance of grounds, buildings and equipment; performance of semi-skilled trades' functions; and other general labor as needed. Position will also provide assistance on other Bureau of Wildlife Resources projects as assigned (e.g., population sampling, wildlife research, habitat enhancement, road construction and maintenance, boating access maintenance, propagation of freshwater mussels and culture and stocking of warm water fish species). Job duties involve working during the week, on weekends and on State holidays with the potential for some evening work and travel.
Qualification Guide
Working knowledge of fish culture and fish stocking is required. Must be able to perform manual labor, including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds) in and around water. Position requires the ability to interact effectively with co-workers, supervisors, and the public. Experience with trout culture, stocking and transportation is preferred. Experience with vehicle maintenance, and trade skills is preferred. College coursework in aquaculture or fisheries science is preferred. Experience with personal computers and MS Office software is required. Successful applicants must be reliable; be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions; and be able to work during the week, on weekends, and holidays.
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Applicant must possess a valid driver's license, with possession of a Class B endorsement preferred. Hire must obtain certification in the "Boating Basics" safety course.
