Principal Duties & Responsibilities
The position is responsible for all phases of fish culture at a cold water fish hatchery. Position is responsible for egg taking, hatching, production and stocking of brown, rainbow and brook trout. Diagnose common diseases of fish and effectively administer remedial treatments. Plan and supervise hatchery operations and statewide distribution of all assigned species. Advance the Department's aquaculture program through development of long and short-term fish production plans that utilize current, proven production techniques and enhance angling recreation. Monitor advances in hatchery technology and incorporate technology, as appropriate, into the hatchery system to insure successful operation of the hatchery and fish production. Prioritize and implement maintenance projects for building, grounds and equipment within budgetary constraints and in compliance with federal and state policies. Establish and enforce bio-security protocols specific to the Wytheville Fish Hatchery. Prepare and submit proposals/reports on production programs/research aimed at improving hatchery operations and efficiency. Maintain a safe working environment by establishing and implementing safety procedures and plans for various operations and locations on the facility. Establish a unit budget for all aspects of hatchery operations, and initiate purchase of supplies and equipment. Prepare and maintain hatchery paperwork including time sheets, charge card reconciliation, vehicle maintenance, facility inventory reports, and stocking reports, submitting them as per prescribed due dates. Hire and manage seasonal staff during production season. Make presentations to agency personnel, professional organizations and the public on fish production and hatchery operations. Plan and participate in the daily operation of the facility including fish culture and facility maintenance.
On site housing is mandatory for this position.
Considerable applied knowledge/background in aquaculture; fish production and fish health; facilities management; personnel development; and safety regulations. Ability to diagnose, analyze and implement strategies in bringing current hatchery's technology up-to-date and advancing that technology to the next level. Extensive experience required in hatchery operations and the spawning and production of trout. Requires mathematical knowledge and skill in calculating complex formulas related to water flows, volumes, loading densities and chemical applications. Ability to interpret/analyze data; manage multi-tasks concurrently; develop and administer hatchery budgets, work plans, programs and activities; prepare monthly and annual reports; prioritize and implement projects; work out-of-doors in varying climatic conditions; and to successfully communicate, both verbally and in writing, with a diverse population. Also requires public speaking, interpersonal, supervisory, and PC and related software skills, with proficiency in Word and Excel.
BS degree in Aquaculture or closely related field and considerable experience in aquaculture. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possession of the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may substitute for the educational requirement. Must possess, or be eligible to possess, a valid VA driver's license.
