Stakeholder Advisory Committee
David Steger, Bear Hound Hunter
I was born, raised, and have always lived in rural Virginia. My family has been in Virginia since the 1700's. I grew up hunting, trapping, and fishing, and continue to pursue big and small game. Since my early teens, though, my passion has been the song of hounds hot on a trail. I love dogs and consider hunting bear with hounds to be the ultimate challenge.
I am retired from Norfolk Southern and I've lived in Catawba on a beef cattle farm for 30 years.
I am a lifetime member of the Virginia Bear Hunters' Association, am a past vice president, and currently serve as Director for Region 2. On the VDGIF's Stakeholder Advisory Committee, I represent Virginia's bear hound hunters and will strive to get input and involvement from a broad segment of the bear-hound-hunting community. Information on the Stakeholder Advisory Committee's work will be communicated to bear hound hunters primarily through the Virginia Bear Hunters' Association's meetings and newsletters.
My goals for this process will be: an awareness of the scope and range of the conflicts that initiated this study, an understanding of other stakeholders' interests and views, and the resolution of real issues with as few new regulations as possible. My hope is that we can have more opportunities to spend relaxing time in the outdoors with simpler regulations and fewer conflicts.
