About the Virginia Tech Facilitators

Steve L. McMullin

Steve McMullin is an associate professor in Virginia Tech's Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, where he specializes in the human dimension of fisheries and wildlife management. Steve has been at Virginia Tech for nearly 19 years and prior to coming to Virginia Tech, he worked for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks as a fisheries manager and as chief of the fisheries management bureau. Both in Montana and in Virginia, Steve has specialized in providing meaningful public involvement in planning and decision-making processes. He developed a process for fisheries management planning that was adopted by the State of Montana and has worked with Virginia wildlife professionals to improve and adapt that process here. He has been a hunter since his childhood and is a strong advocate for maintaining the tradition of hunting both for its cultural importance and its importance as a tool for managing wildlife populations.

Sarah Lupis Kozlowski

Sarah Lupis Kozlowski is a Research Associate at Virginia Tech. Sarah grew up in Connecticut on Long Island Sound. She earned a B.S. in Wildlife Conservation from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and a Masters degree from Utah State University where she studied sage-grouse and worked closely with local grassroots groups to proactively address conservation and management of the birds she studied. After completing her degree, Sarah continued to work in sage-grouse conservation as a Community-Based Conservation Extension Specialist with Utah State University Extension. Sarah worked with local working groups in Utah to develop local conservation and management plans for sage-grouse and with a multi-stakeholder, multi-agency team to develop a statewide plan for prairie dogs. Both cases involved complex wildlife management issues on both private and public land. Sarah grew up fishing in Long Island Sound and later fished trout streams out west. She has spent time waterfowl, elk, and upland game hunting, often with dogs. Sarah and her husband, also a wildlife biologist, also enjoy hiking and camping with their lab-mix, Fischer.
