Ecoregions of Virginia
Ecoregions provide the basic framework of ecological patterns and process. Robert Bailey of the USDA Forest Service classified Ecoregions at multiple geographic scales using a variety of information including, landform, climate, and land use patterns. The multiple levels are shown below:
Domain
Division
Provinces
Section
Subsections
At each progressively lower level, the amount of detail and number of categories increases. The maps above show Virginia's Ecoregions at the Division (lower left), Section (main map), and Subsection (lower right) level. Knowing Ecoregions and their relationships helps land managers understand important physical and biological processes.
