Shenandoah River - South Fork - Facilities
There are 20 public access points along the South Fork Shenandoah River. The VDGIF owns or is a cooperating partner for sixteen of these access sites. Two sites are owned by the United States Forest Service (USFS), Shenandoah State Park offers access to the river, and MERCK & Co., Inc has a site near Elkton, Virginia. Some of these access sites have concrete boat ramps, but most only offer access for canoes or hand launched boats. Portage facilities are available at the three hydro dams located at Shenandoah, Newport and Luray.
Between the Port Republic and Island Ford Access sites, an old "dilapidated" concrete dam spans the river. This dam should be considered hazardous under all flow conditions and persons floating this section of river should not attempt to "run" the dam. If persons wish to travel this section of river they should exit the river on the left bank at the dam to portage downstream. There is no developed portage trail around this dam.
Outfitters & Guides
Several canoe outfitters operate on the South Fork Shenandoah. They offer canoe/raft/tube rental packages for float trips of various lengths. Also several fishing guide services operate on the South Fork.
State Parks & Camping
Shenandoah River State Park is located along the South Fork at Bentonville, VA. The park boasts six miles of river frontage and 1,604 acres of land. With so much public shoreline access the park is a great place for wading anglers to fish the South Fork. Shenandoah State Park offers tent camping, picnicking facilities and public restrooms.
Primitive camping is permitted on USFS property along the river. In addition, several private campgrounds are located along the South Fork Shenandoah.
Please respect the rights of private property owners along the river! The majority of the riparian area on both banks of the South Fork Shenandoah is privately owned.
