Board of Game and Inland Fisheries

John W. Montgomery, Jr.

I have had a life-long love of the outdoors. I grew up freshwater fishing and shooting ducks and geese. My grandfather taught me how to sit quietly and wait for squirrels to scamper through the woods. We would never take home more than my grandmother could use for a stew. As soon as I was old enough to drive, I would hunt with my friends before school.

Today, I enjoy taking my oldest son, Jack, in the woods and on the waters of the Commonwealth. Whether fishing on the bay or hunting ducks on the Chickahominy, time with him in the "field" keeps me well-grounded. My four-year-old son, Travis, wakes up almost every Saturday asking if we are going fishing. He was hooked with the first croaker that he caught off his grandfather's pier on the Piankatank River.

I see my role on the VDGIF board as being the spokesman for all those dads and children who are looking for those same memories that I have had with my dad and that I am having with my boys.
