Board of Game and Inland Fisheries

Sherry S. Crumley

They say the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree and for me that's true. My father, Karl T. Smith, was on the board and served as chairman of the former Tennessee Game and Fish Commission in the1960s. I grew up in a hunting and fishing family. My husband, Jim Crumley, started Trebark Camouflage, the first nonmilitary camouflage in 1980. Since then, the sale of hunting and fishing clothing and accessories has been the livelihood of my family.

I started hunting in the spring of 1986 and have successfully hunted elk, whitetail deer, the Eastern, Osceola, Merriam's, and Rio Grande wild turkey, doves, ducks, geese, chukar, quail, swan, pheasant and wild boar. I hunt with shotgun, rifle, muzzleloader and crossbow.

I fish occasionally and taught my sons how to fish like my daddy taught me: for crappie with balled up cheese or corn as bait. This summer our 11 year old granddaughter and 9 year old grandson learned how to fly fish while visiting us.

We feed the birds and I keep a pair of binoculars and a birding guide in the kitchen window.

I served two terms on the board of the National Wild Turkey Federation and chaired the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia board. In 2000 I served as chairman of the Virginia Heritage Foundation and put 12,000 miles on my car working to pass the Constitutional Amendment which guarantees Virginians the right to hunt, fish and harvest game. Currently I serve on the National Rifle Association's Hunting and Wildlife Conservation committee.

My husband and I live on a farm in Botetourt County where we farm for wildlife.
